Frederick Leyland commissioned Whistler to paint Rose and Silver: The princess from the land of procelain (Middle painting) to hang in his specially designed porcelain parlor. The parlor was crafted to fit each of his collected porcelain objects, with antique leather paneling and light fixtures. Leyland hoped including a “worldly” inspired painting by Whistler in the parlor would increase his progressive status in the eyes of those he frequently entertained in the parlor. Leyland went away on holiday leaving Whistler to his own devices. Whistler went rogue and painted the entire room, including the ceiling, with gold leaf, flowers and design elements from his painting. Whistler held an early model of Art for Art’s sake, believing that art did not need to speak for political, practical or functional purposes. This room is perhaps, one of the more spectacular versions of his manifest. Upon his return, Leyland was furious and refused to pay Whistler for his over enthusiasm. In response Whistler added a peacock mural, hoping to portray Leyland as pompous and ignorant. Leyland kicked Whistler out of his home. More here:

http://www.peacockroom.wayne.edu

Whistler was the first to sell an abstract Art for Art’s sake piece for a high sum of money. It is called Nocturne in Black and Gold: The falling rocket 1875. He was bashed heavily for this piece, so much so Whistler sued Ruskin for his slander.

Kurt Vonnegut - BlueBeard

Their company came to be known as Morris & Co, and influenced interior design and textiles for years to come. The movement was created with the intention to bring back worth and value to the working class and the hand of the artist. This is similar to what we see today with the emphasis on hand crafted objects that are being sold for high prices. It is an attempt to break from consumerism, capitalism and the elite by bringing attention back to labor. However, as is evident in today’s market as well, although this is a noble ideal, the objects produced are often too expensive for the working class to buy and just become a different form of assembly line for the upper class. As seen in the pictures above, Morris & Co specialized in creating highly decorative motifs referenced from medieval and early renaissance. This was meant to return focus to the interior as a home, in hopes of not only changing the burgeoning flaneur and voyeuristic society that Morris considered immoral; but changing societies values back to more traditional views of home life. As such, the furniture although beautiful, is also very utilitarian focused, so that working class and families alike could make use of it.

(Much of Morris’s values and the Arts and Crafts movement in London, are a continuation of those Morris helped to foster in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood)

Janine Antoni, Saddle - Hide/leather sculpture

Janine Antoni, Saddle - Hide/leather sculpture

Artist Ursula von Rydingsvard’s wood sculptures and...

Artist Ursula von Rydingsvard’s wood sculptures and installations.
This is one of artist/performer Vito Acconci’s earlier works.Vito would follow a passerby until they entered a private space that he could not follow them into.
